This year we will present works by composers who are the great masters of the symphonic art form. Each has made a special and permanent contribution to the world of music. The series opens with Brahms's First Symphony. Composed in the shadow of Beethoven's great Choral Symphony, which concludes this season, Brahms successfully developed the inventiveness of that deaf genius and carried it to the next generation of Romanticists.
The orchestra will also explore the simplicity and melodic brilliance of Franz Schubert, the dramatic emotion of an early Tchaikovsky symphony, and the warmth and humanity of Dvorak's Cello Concerto. We will also share some unique works that opened our ears and brought new dimensions to the concert hall. The jazzy sounds of Gershwin perked up American audiences, while the colorful orchestrations of Ravel in his Mother Goose Suite expanded the vocabulary of individual and combinations of instruments. Igor Stravinsky used new harmonies and effects to re-explore the form of the classicists, cleverly displayed in his Second Suite.
